Yeovil Town made their fourth summer signing earlier today, snapping up former Bournemouth and Plymouth Argyle defender Stephane Zubar.
However, the Guadeloupean has spent the last season outside of the Football League, plying his trade with Weymouth in the Southern League Premier Divison.
The move from the Terras to the Glovers may not seem like a betrayal on the scale of, for example, Sol Campbell swapping Tottenham Hotspur for Arsenal, but that’s how Weymouth fans are treating it.
Despite the two clubs now being three divisions apart, there is a historic rivalry between them from numerous non-league meetings almost two decades ago.
It can also be argued that since entering the Football League, Yeovil’s main rivals are more likely to be the Bristol clubs or Exeter City. Indeed, when Calvin Brooks went the other way by leaving Huish Park to join Weymouth, there was very little fuss.
That makes the reaction even more unexpected. Nevertheless, here are some of the most salty tweets from those Terras fans that have a bitter taste in their mouths. Warning: there is some very strong language.
From our point of view, it’s always a good sign when the former club of a new signing is disappointed to see them go, even if we get called “scum” and “slime” in the process!
If nothing else, it will certainly make the friendly at the Bob Lucas Stadium on the 11th July very interesting indeed.
