Yeovil Town fans found themselves looking back on memories of club legend Chris Weale after the goalkeeper signed for local side Dorchester Town earlier this week.
The 35-year-old had been on the books of Derby County until his contract was cancelled in January, having departed Huish Park the season prior.
Born in Yeovil, ‘Wealey’ made 236 appearances for the Glovers across three spells, and helped his hometown club to two promotions and an FA Trophy.
However, what was arguably his shining moment came in the 2008/09 season as he scored a goal against Hereford United.
Weale had come up for a corner in the dying seconds of the game, and ended up heading home to earn his side a 2 – 2 draw, a result which helped Yeovil beat relegation to League Two.
But Weale is not the only player to have scored at Huish Park from in between the sticks. Two other keepers have managed the unusual feat.
In April 1990, terrible conditions led to David Fry’s drop-kick being caught by the wind and flying into the net during a match against Slough Town.
However, while Weale’s header was crucial to earning a point, Fry’s effort was less meaningful as the Glovers scored six other goals on the night to win 7 – 2.
Another goalie who found the net for Yeovil is Tony Pennock, a player whose legendary status is almost as high as Weale’s.
Pennock’s foray into goalscoring came during the 1996/97 season, just one week after Yeovil lifted the ICIS League trophy away at Bromley.
With the title already secured and the pressure off, Pennock was allowed to take a penalty to help his side to a 4 – 0 win over Chertsey Town.
Unfortunately for the now-Aberstwyth Town manager, there is no known footage of the pen. Even more unfortunately for him, the footage of his infamous error against Cardiff City in the FA Cup is available online…
We’d like to wish Chris Weale all the best at Dorchester. If the Magpies ever get a last-minute corner, they’ll know who to send up for it!
As for Yeovil, who knows? Maybe Artur Krysiak or Jonny Maddison will join the club’s list of goal-scoring goalkeepers next season…
