To begin our look back at the 2016/17 campaign, we’re choosing our player of the season.
Such is the sour mood around Huish Park at the moment, there are some fans that claim nobody deserves a ‘Best Player’ award. That simply isn’t true, as there are many members of the team this season who deserve recognition. Here, we’ve given our top three.
Make sure to let us know whether you think we made the right choice on Twitter. Who would you have picked?
Third place: Otis Khan
Having been released by Barnsley, Otis Khan signed for Yeovil in the summer and made an immediate impression, scoring on his debut against Notts County in the opening game of the season.
The former Ninja Warrior UK contestant (no, really!) proved himself to be an exciting winger who’s not afraid to take on defenders and is capable of moments of real quality.
Khan particularly shined in the first half of the season as one of the wide men in a 4-3-3, and despite an ankle injury forcing him out of action for a large period, we hope he signs a new contract with the Glovers and continues his form next year.
Second place: Alex Lacey
After failing to tie-down his place in the side last season, Alex Lacey managed to become one of Yeovil’s more consistent players in his second year with the club, with 45 appearances to his name.
We also saw the former Luton Town centre-back become more of a leader on the pitch, which was essential after the long-term injury to veteran defender Darren Ward.
As well as being a rock in defence, the 23-year-old managed to get his name on the scoresheet four times with some crucial goals. With all this in mind, it’s no wonder that Lacey dominated Yeovil’s end-of-season awards.
First place: Matty Dolan
It’s true what they say: Matty Dolan’s magic, he wears a magic hat.
As well as being Yeovil’s best player this season in our eyes, Dolan has also been the team’s most improved member from last campaign. His five goals, seven assists and potency from dead ball situations have made him a fan’s favourite, and rightly so.
On top of that, four of his five goals have been stunners, meaning that he’s in with a good shout in our ‘Best Goal of the Season’ award too. All Glovers fans will be hoping he agrees a new contract to stay in Somerset.
